The appeal, held in conjunction with the Samaritans Christmas Appeal, helps to brighten the lives of local families who are doing it tough over Christmas.
At the launch, mayor Kay Fraser invited the Lake Macquarie community to share the goodwill of the season by donating gifts and goods for those less fortunate.
“These gifts and donations will relieve pressure on families and individuals who are facing challenges and allow them to enjoy Christmas,” Cr Fraser said.
“It is important for us to look beyond our own circle at this time of year and think about how we can help others in our community and spread the goodwill of the season.”
Cr Fraser said Christmas could be a difficult and stressful time for people who were facing financial challenges.
“Donating to the Mayor’s Christmas Appeal is a simple way to help ensure all members of our community have the opportunity to celebrate and enjoy Christmas,” Cr Fraser said.
The Mayor’s Christmas Appeal will continue until December 14.
Unwrapped gifts and other donated items can be left at the reception desk at the Council Administration Centre, at Speers Point, or at any Lake Mac Libraries branch.
The Samaritans Christmas Appeal assists thousands of families across the Hunter each year through its combined programs. In addition to toys, people can make donations of gifts for teenagers and adults, non-perishable food, Christmas items or essential household goods.
The Samaritans also welcome cash donations, which can be made through the organisation’s website, samaritans.org.au.
