IT was 2007 when the blokes from the Probus Club of Rathmines-Wangi Wangi made the decision to open membership to women.

And they haven’t looked back.
Don Ansty has been at the helm as club president for eight years, and before that was treasurer (among other portfolios).
“Our numbers were really falling off at the time. We were down to about 20 members,” Mr Ansty recalled.
“It took a while to convince everybody that it [admitting women] was a good idea, but we now have 120 members,” he said.
As they say, there is strength in numbers, and the club’s growing membership means that it can really spread its wings when it comes to outings and guest speakers.
The group caters for retired and semi-retired people, and members range in age from 60-something to 90-something.
The group enjoys monthly outings, nominated by members, which can include everything from walks and barbecues around Lake Macquarie, to nights at the theatre, mystery day tours and cruises.
Among the outings the club has enjoyed this year were a Christmas in July cruise on Newcastle Harbour, a ferry tour of historic sites on the Hawkesbury, and a tour of Fort Scratchley, in Newcastle.
Next month, the group will catch the train to Central Station for a tour of the Queen Victoria Building, and some Christmas shopping.
“It’s all about friendship and having fun,” he said.
“There’s no fundraising, it’s a non-political group, and there’s no obligation to go on any tour,” he said.
The group meets at Wangi Workers Club on the second Monday of the month, and guest speakers are featured.
