The tour was booked as one of the club’s recent monthly outings.
Co-ordinator of excursions and outings for the club, Col Whitney, said it was an interesting excursion in many ways.
“Several of our club members had childhood connections with some of the photos and other historic memorabilia which was on display at the sports museum under the Ladies Pavilion,” Mr Whitney said.
“Areas not normally accessible by non-members of the SCG were of special interest.”
Probus clubs were formed as an offshoot to Rotary in 1973.
Probus takes its name from the words professional and business.
Initially, being a professional was a prerequisite of membership of Probus, but over time that requirement was relaxed.
These days, there are men’s and women’s Probus clubs, and they cater for retired and semi-retired people who enjoy socialising.
There’s no requirement to get involved in fund-raising, or community projects, and Probus clubs have no political or religious leanings.
And when it comes to the club’s outings, it’s not exclusively a men’s club.
Mr Whitney said at Toronto-Macquarie Men’s Probus Club, members’ wives and partners had also joined the club’s recent outings to the Sydney Opera House, ABC Studios at Pyrmont, and the historic Cockatoo Island.
“Hunter Valley excursions are also on the schedule in the coming months,” Mr Whitney said.
“In each case, an expert tour guide makes the experience so much more interesting.”
