Transport for NSW said the loop road was a major milestone in the upgrade of the M1 Pacific Motorway between Tuggerah and Doyalson.
"The new loop allows a seamless journey for motorists travelling from Warnervale and improves traffic flow for motorists heading north on the M1," a spokesperson for Transport for NSW said.
Motorists will encounter the loop road when travelling west along Sparks Road, past the airport and Lakes Grammar School, towards the approach to the intersection with Hue Hue Road.
"Motorists travelling west across the Sparks Road bridge will be able to use the new loop to head north towards Newcastle simply by staying left, following the signs and driving onto the new loop."
After exiting the loop road, motorists then enter the newly-opened lane, where they can continue towards Doyalson and Swansea via the existing Doyalson Link Road, or use the new underpass to safely join the M1 after the Doyalson interchange to travel towards Newcastle.
"This loop will operate like the one at the Tuggerah interchange, so motorists are reminded to keep left as they need to use the loop to head north on the M1," the spokesperson said.
"Motorists are asked to please slow down and follow the signs until they are familiar with the change.
"All road users are asked to be aware of potential changed traffic conditions while travelling on the M1 and heavy vehicles should follow road signs and remain in the left lane."
Speed limits remain at 80kph in all construction areas for the safety of workers and all road users.
