Marsh is still sidelined with a self-inflicted hand injury, but is hoping to make his return in time for the start of the BBL season later this month.

Green is being viewed as Australia's next great allrounder in all three formats, with the 20-year-old's emergence putting in doubt Marsh's long-term international future.

But Marsh is taking it all in his stride, even joking it might be time for him to retire from Test cricket.

"I got my baggy green out and hung it up," Marsh said.

"He (Green) is a great talent. I want to help him as much as I can as a captain and as a teammate.

"It's always great when we as a country have kids like him bursting onto the scene. I'm probably just as excited as everyone."

Green is currently unable to bowl because of a back injury.

Marsh said that could be a blessing in disguise, allowing Green to develop his craft as a batsman.

And when Green is finally ready to push for an international debut as an allrounder, Marsh will embrace it.

"It's certainly healthy (the competition for spots)," Marsh said.

"When I first started Shane Watson was I guess you could say my competition, even though I didn't see it like that.

"And we have guys like Marcus Stoinis, Moises Henriques, and now Cam Green. We have a lot of depth when it comes to allrounders.

Marsh's hopes of playing Test cricket this summer went up in smoke after he broke his hand while punching a wall in frustration in October.

The 28-year-old hoped the injury would only take four weeks to heal but it's already been eight weeks.

However, the end is finally in sight after Marsh returned to training on Tuesday.

Marsh is hoping he'll be given the green light to return in the Scorchers' season opener against the Sydney Sixers on December 18.

If he plays, it will be as a specialist batsman.

"I batted and bowled today in the nets," Marsh said.

"I didn't bowl at 100 per cent, that will take a bit more time to get my workloads up. But I certainly gave it a good crack with the bat, and it felt really good.

"There's a few things we can do with taping to minimise the movement in my wrist."
