While the loss has left the young Kookaburras outfit with just one win for the 2019-20 season, there is still an air of confidence in the first XI as they prepare for the second half of the competition.

Captain Corey Brown said that the team's bowling and fielding performances had been a highlight. "Our batting, however, still needs plenty of work," he conceded.

The visitors had given themselves every chance of taking first innings points after day one, having Charlestown at 8/113 in reply to the Kookaburras' meagre total of 128.

The bowlers, however, could not find the breakthrough and the Charlestown tail managed to pile on another 50-plus runs before being dismissed for 174 and amassing a lead of 46.

Following his first ball duck in the first innings, Brown decided to drop himself to number three for the start of the second innings and gamble on a new opening pairing of Connor Lupton and Michael Pepper.

The strategy looked to be paying off as the openers piled on the runs for a 71-run partnership with Lupton scoring 31 and Pepper, who topped scored in the first innings, adding 30.

However, with the opening pair back in the pavilion, a batting collapse ensued and much like the first innings Toronto had their backs against the wall losing the next four wickets for just two runs.

The only batsman to stem the tide was number six Ethan Urquhart, who showed plenty of resilience and character to compile a high score of 40.

With time running out Charlestown pushed for an outright victory and went close to achieving their aim before the Toronto bowlers stemmed the flow of runs.

Josh Westwood was at his best taking 4/11 off three overs, while Andy Somerville chipped in with 2/44.

"Westy bowled well to the plans we set and helped avoid an outright defeat when it looked ominous," Brown said. "Our fielding in the second innings was a major positive."
