Wests reached 3-127 by stumps and will push hard for outright points when the match resumes this Saturday.
The test now for the young Toronto team is to stay engaged with the contest and to challenge Wests over the second day's play.
Logan Johnson top scored for Toronto with 29 on a good pitch. Finlay Thornton was next best with 15 not out.
"Logan was the only batsman in the top six who looked comfortable," Toronto's opening batsman Corey Brown said.
"Bowling wise, Andy Somerville bowled really well and was unlucky."
Brown said he sensed the team was down on confidence in the field after being dismissed so cheaply.
"I think as a team we were quick to write off our chances, instead of applying pressure on them early," he said.
Wests representative fast bowler Brad Aldous was the chief destroyer.
He claimed 4-38 including four of the first five Toronto wickets to fall.
Brown said Toronto still had plenty to play for.
"The team's motivation will be to rectify the wrongs of last week and to concentrate on building some pressure on Saturday," he said.
