During Tuesday's catastrophic fire warning period, several schools across Lake Macquarie and the Central Coast closed as a precaution.
They included Awaba, Biraban, Blue Haven, Bonnells Bay, Cooranbong, Dora Creek, Fassifern, Fennell Bay, Gwandalan, Jilliby, Lake Munmorah, Morisset and Wyong Creek public schools, as well as Lake Munmorah High School.
Among the local non-government schools that closed on Tuesday were MacKillop Catholic College, at Warnervale; Darkinjung Barker College, Yarramalong; St Brendan's, Lake Munmorah; St Brigid's Catholic College, Lake Munmorah; and St Joseph's, Kilaben Bay.
On Wednesday, a number of NSW TAFE campuses including those at Wyong and Ourimbah will also remain closed.
"Approximately 152 schools will remain non-operational in fire-affected areas [on Wednesday]," a spokesperson for NSW Department of Education said.
"This situation may change at short notice, and the department will continuously update information at education.nsw.gov.au/public-schools/school-safety."
A spokesperson for the Catholic Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle, which includes Lake Macquarie, said parents should ultimately decide whether or not to send their children to school today.
"While most schools will open, parents and carers concerned about the wellbeing of their child should use their own discretion regarding absence," the spokesperson said.
"If there is a concern relating to a child's respiratory or other health-related issues please take this into consideration. Students who do attend school will be advised to remain indoors due to the poor air quality."
