The Coal Point Public School Naturespace and Community Hub was one of the three successful proposals to win state government funding this year in the My Community Project scheme.
The project will see the creation of outdoor activity zones for play and fitness, an educational bush track, walking paths, low-maintenance landscaping, seats, directional signage and a picnic area.
The project will be located off Rofe Street, beside the top playing field at the school and the adjacent bushland within the school boundary.
Among the team driving the project are locals Elizabeth Addis, Sarah McKensey and project manager Lindy Hulton-Larson, a landscape architect.
All have children attending the school.
Ms Hulton-Larson said although the project would be created on the school grounds, it would be open to the entire community outside school hours.
For that reason, it was important to consult widely, she said.
The project team, including Coal Point principal Kim Creswell, had sought and received feedback from teachers.
The team provides project updates on a Facebook page, and there will be an online survey soon.
"Our goal is to target the school community, plus the wider community," Ms Hulton-Larson said.
Ms Addis said the project promised opportunities for the community to connect with, and appreciate, the natural landscape.
"We'll continue with our community consultation for the next month, then we'll move into the design phase," Ms Addis said.
"There will also be opportunities for locals to have input during that design phase."
The Coal Point Public School grounds are open to the community after school hours, at weekends, and during school holidays.
Ms Hulton-Larson said it was hoped the project would transform the space into a multi-generational hub.
She can envision mums exercising with toddlers in prams, grandparents exploring the landscaped bush tracks with their grandchildren, and nature lovers of all ages enjoying a picnic.
