The festival, at Speers Point Park, will see more than 40 sessions and attractions on Saturday from 8am to 2pm.
Sunday will see live music at the inaugural LSF Sunday Sessions, from 11am to 4pm, headlined by local duo Howie and Alex.
Gardening Australia host and festival headliner Costa Georgiadis will tackle two burning topics at Saturday's main event: Sustainability in Action, at 9am, and Gardening the Future, at 11am.
The Silver Logie-winner will also host a Q&A with Lake Macquarie backyard gardener and Instagram star Lee Sullivan.
Saturday's action would be spread across seven zones, Lake Macquarie City Council's arts, culture and tourism manager, Jacqui Hemsley, said.
"Living Smart Festival gets bigger and better every year," she said.
"The variety on offer this year really reflects how society as a whole is embracing sustainability and smart living concepts."
This year's 'Eat' zone will include a kitchen tent and woodfired oven area, with local Masterchef stars Steph De Sousa and Reece Hignell among the foodies featured throughout the day.
