The jetty has been closed for more than two years.
A spokesperson for Lake Macquarie City Council said the old jetty would be replaced by a modern structure.
The new jetty will feature access ramps, service pedestals, and utilities such as lighting and water outlets.
"The jetty will remain closed for the duration of construction," the spokesperson said.
"Boat users are encouraged to use alternate jetties at Dobell Drive and Watkins Road, Wangi Wangi."
The jetty's closure has hit the town hard.
It has prevented boaties from stopping at the jetty to access food and other supplies from Wangi Wangi's shops.
In March, Wangi Wangi RSL Club operations manager Wayne Izzard said the downturn in the club's revenue had been "substantial".
Mr Izzard said the jetty was probably unrivaled in Lake Macquarie in terms of how reliant local businesses were on it for bringing income ashore.
"People stop at the jetty to come and do their shopping, to pick up their bits and pieces and supplies for the weekend, and to come and have lunch, " he said.
Last year, Lake Macquarie MP Greg Piper secured $1.3 million is state government funding through the Boating Now program to improve boating facilities in the electorate.
That included $668,779 to replace the Wangi Wangi RSL Club jetty.
Meanwhile, the demolition of the Speers Point Park jetty, and construction of its replacement facility, is scheduled to start in October.
