Last year, Cooks Hill Surf Life Saving Club was crowned NSW Good Sports Club of the Year.
It was celebrated for reaching the highest level of the Good Sports program and for implementing policies around alcohol management, safe transport, tobacco, healthy eating and positive spectator behaviour.
Cooks Hill Surf Life Saving Club also prides itself on its inclusive programs, including beach education programs for refugees and international students, nipper sessions for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander youth, plus assisted swimming sessions for people with disabilities.
The core Good Sports program offers clubs free tools, resources and practical support to implement policies around alcohol management, tobacco, and safe transport.
"Good Sports is working with than 9,500 community sports clubs across Australia to build a healthier sporting nation," Dr Lalor said.
"Community sporting clubs that role-model healthy behaviours are leaders in their community and play an important role in reducing and preventing harms from alcohol and other drugs."
Good Sports is proven to reduce risky drinking at participating clubs by 37 per cent and has seen a reduction of alcohol-related accidents among Good Sports club members and supporters by 42 per cent.
"All community sporting clubs across Australia have the opportunity to join Good Sports," Dr Lalor said.
"We know running a community sporting club is hard work. That's why the Good Sports team is committed to guiding clubs through the Good Sports program, making it easier for already busy volunteers to implement."
