What was born from that idea was the Choosing Hope walk but never did the Hamlyn Terrace mother think it would effect so many lives.
"The idea for the walk came out of me wanting to farewell him [son]. I hated the idea that no one would ever get to know him," Mrs Thomas said.
"So I made a promise that I would do something that honoured him, that showed that he mattered. It unfolded into this remembrance walk for the bereaved.
"I've definitely been blown away by the response to this event. In the first year we had 200 people turn out, last year it was 450. In the past three years the size has more than doubled in size.
"It's such a mix of emotions seeing so many people turn out to the walk.
"You're sad that so many families have lost children so early in their lives but incredibly grateful and happy the supportive community you have created."
Mrs Thomas and husband Dave, from Hamlyn Terrace, had already felt the grief of losing a child following a miscarriage the year before the car accident that robbed them of their son. The couple will take part in this year's walk with their three children.
On establishing Choosing Hope, Mrs Thomas partnered with Bears of Hope Pregnancy and Infant Loss Support which prepares packages including bears, support material and a keepsake book for hospitals and GPs to offer when a family loses a baby.
Money raised through the walk is donated to Bears of Hope.
The next Choosing Hope walk will be held on the Central Coast on Sunday, October 13. The walk begins at 2.30pm at Saltwater Reserve, Long Jetty and finishes at 5pm at Picnic Point, The Entrance.
Participants will join in a walk along the Tuggerah lake foreshore, browse some market stalls and grab a bite to eat before having an opportunity to take part in a remembrance service and flower release in honour of the baby or babies they have lost.
"The flower release is really beautiful and moving. We go down to the edge of the lake with real flowers and release them," Mrs Thomas said.
Registrations for the walk are being taken now.
Adults cost $20, children aged 5 to 17 cost $5, families of four $50 and groups (a minimum of six) cost $15 per person.
Registration prices are inclusive of a shuttle bus return and flower for each adult to release.
