Newcastle audiences will be able to see why Circa's on-stage feats have earned them high praise when its latest offering, titled Peepshow, is performed at Civic Theatre on Friday, September 13.
Peepshow is a thrilling new creation that infuses world-class contemporary circus with the nostalgia of bygone eras.
The Newcastle audience can expect to see teetering towers of balanced bodies, extreme bending and devilishly precarious aerials on, and above, Civic Theatre's historic stage.
Combining some of the finest acrobatic talent on the planet under the direction of circus visionary Yaron Lifschitz, Circa's Peepshow creates a "playfully exhilarating ride into the beautifully bizarre recesses of your mind".
"Peepshow is about looking and being looked at," Libby McDonnell, associate director for Circa, said.
"It's playful, sexy and quirky performance viewed through the lens of circus."
To date, Circa has toured to 39 countries across six continents and performed to more than a million people, gathering standing ovations, rave reviews and sold-out houses along the way.
The performers bringing Peepshow to Newcastle this month spent six months in Berlin last year performing it at The Chameleon Theater.
Nathan Knowles, originally from Vancouver in Canada, has been a full-time ensemble member of Circa for three years.
Peepshow will be his 10th show from the company's repertoire.
At the age of 17, Knowles moved to Montreal and spent four years at the prestigious National Circus School, specialising in hand balancing, contortion and aerial hoop.
"Peepshow, specifically, is very special to me because it combines two of my passions: contemporary circus and the world of cabaret," Knowles said.
"Peepshow allows me the opportunity to dissect and taste what cabaret can be in a way that I had not touched upon before. It lets audiences see the world from the other side of the mirror.
"Circa approaches circus as an art and not spectacle or more importantly not as a sport. They leave their audiences full of questions and feelings rather than than the usual reaction to circus being simple amazement over feats of force and strength."
Tickets to see Circa's Peepshow start at $30.
