Australian Reptile Park awarded regional tourism gong
THE Australian Reptile Park, at Somersby, has taken out the Major Tourist Attractions Gold category at the 2019 Destination Sydney Surrounds North Regional Tourism Awards. Leading regional tourism businesses, events, and visitor experiences were recognised at the awards presented in Newcastle on Monday. Blacksmiths Beachside Holiday Park took out the Caravan and Holiday Parks Gold category. Other winners included Hunter Valley Gardens, Crowne Plaza Hunter Valley, and Beyond Ballooning.

CENTRAL Coast Local Health District (CCLHD) is encouraging locals to register to be an organ and tissue donor, and to speak to their loved ones about their wishes as part of DonateLife Week (July 28 to August 4). Today, more than 1,400 Australians are on wait lists for a transplant. "It is important people register to be an organ and tissue donor and that they have a conversation with their loved ones about their wishes," CCLHD organ donation coordinator Yoni Hope-Hodgetts said.Visit donatelife.org.au
Lake Macquarie councillors vote to maintain their number
LAKE Macquarie City Council has confirmed its councillor numbers will remain the same for the 2020 election, but not before councillors debated axing or increasing their own positions and whether the council - or voters - should elect the mayor. After a somewhat fiery debate during a recent ordinary meeting, the council locked in 13 councillors, including a popularly-elected mayor, for the next term of government. The vote to keep the status quo was 8-2. The council election will be held on September 12, 2020.
Lighthouse board a shining light for Coast
THE Norah Head Lighthouse Reserve Land Manager Board has been nominated for the 2019 NSW/ACT Regional Achievement and Community Awards. The board has been nominated in the Department of Planning and Industry Crown Land Manager Excellence category. The lighthouse has become a popular place to visit, whether it's staying in one of the lightkeeper's quarters, attending a wedding or a festival, guiding a school excursion, or simply relaxing with a picnic and enjoying the views.

Innovation summit to plot course for 'smart city'
NSW Business Chamber will host 200 business leaders at an innovation summit at Mingara Recreation Club next Thursday to discuss how to transform the Central Coast into a cutting edge, digital ready 'smart city'. "Being a 'smart city' isn't just pie-in the sky nonsense or jargon. It's a practical strategy to help boost growth, jobs and prosperity for all Coasties - and it's a strategy that our council and all levels of government need to embrace", Paula Martin, of NSW Business Chamber Central Coast, said.
Councillors to attend 2019 NSW Local Government Conference
LAKE Macquarie City Council has nominated councillors Kay Fraser, David Belcher, Kevin Baker, Brian Adamthwaite, Barney Langford and Colin Grigg to attend the 2019 Local Government NSW Annual Conference, in Warwick Farm, from October 14 to 16. The conference is the annual policy-making event for general-purpose councils. It is the key event of the local government year where local councillors come together to share ideas and debate issues.
Comedy on the menu at Wangi District Workers Club
THE Catalina Players' theatre restaurant season opens this Saturday night at Wangi District Workers Club. Two one-act comedies directed by Helen Bristow are on the menu: The Worst Day Of My Life and The Spy Who Came In For The Phone.
