I was very happy to see work start on the construction of a 165 metre footpath, pedestrian refuge and other pedestrian improvements on the southern side of Beach Road in Redhead.

It's a project that provides safer pedestrian access to Redhead Beach and makes the beach more accessible for the whole community.

It also connects the retail hub at Redhead to the beach and links Webb Park playground with the wider area.

It's a popular space all year, but I know this work will mean that during peak times in summer it is going to be a whole lot easier and safer to get to and from the beach.

I am told that the construction of the path and associated roadworks are expected to be complete by late 2019, weather permitting.

The other great addition to Redhead Beach is the completion last week of the accessible ramp, which now provides people with disability to access the beach and participate in water activities.

It is a fantastic step forward for our community and builds on Council's commitment to make our beaches, baths and swim centres more accessible.

Last Friday night we had the chance to recognise outstanding local businesses and employees at the Lake Macquarie Business Excellence Awards (pictured).

Congratulations to all of the winners and finalists, it was such a pleasure to showcase some of the many talented and indeed dedicated business owners and employees across our city.

The awards featured almost 50 finalists across 14 categories, who together represented our incredible business sector. We heard about some amazing businesses and employees who took out their categories, and they should be very proud of their achievements.

It is wonderful to reflect on the capacity of our city, which is home to more than 12,000 businesses and a highly skilled workforce of over 52,500 people.

All of these people and organisations play an important part of contributing to our local economy and continue to help make our city thrive.
