WHEN the women from Toronto Adventist Church's Care Ministeries call in at Toronto Private Hospital, it's usually to drop off a bunch of care packages they've put together, and quilts they've sewn, for patients. But when the church's Barbara Bond and Elza Crawford visited recently, they left with much more than they'd arrived with. That's because the hospital staff had personally donated stacks of new clothing and foodstuffs for another cause that the women support, Reach Homeless Services. Reach Homeless Services is a volunteer organisation that provides help for anyone who needs it on the streets. That help includes the provision of food and water, clothing and blankets, and referrals to health and welfare organisations. The hospital's director of clinical services, Leanne Bashford, said the women's longtime support for patients and their families at the hospital was much appreciated. "For years, the ladies have been bringing in quilts and care packages for patients at the hospital," she said. The care packages typically include a range of toiletries, and the quilts usually feature an inspiring verse or words of comfort. "Their beautiful quilts make a difference to how the rooms look, and they really touch the families of our patients in their time of need," Ms Bashford said. "Families will often leave thank-you notes for the ladies. "I thought we could give something back to the ladies, too, so this is our thank you," she said. Socks, underwear, gloves and beanies were among the items donated by staff.
