MEMBER for Swansea and shadow minister for better regulation, Yasmin Catley, said NSW Labor was standing up for vulnerable people by tabling a bill that proposed to ban instant cash loan machines. She said the machines often trapped low-income earners "in vicious cycles of debt". The machines look like ATMs and instantly dispense cash loans of between $50 and $1000. There is one such machine at San Remo. "This is about protecting people from being ripped off," Ms Catley said.

Feedback invited on Toukley revitalisation
CENTRAL Coast residents are invited to provide feedback on the council's draft concept plans to revitalise Toukley, including a proposed redesign of the Village Green. The next phase of the 'Let's Talk Toukley Town Centre' plan will also give locals an update on current projects including Wi-Fi in the town centre; a Toukley Library refurbishment; additional parking; and the resurfacing of the Coles car park. Funds available for heritage restorations
THE search is on for heritage projects across Lake Macquarie that are eligible for Lake Macquarie City Council grants of up to $5000. Council's Local Heritage Places Fund helps owners maintain and restore historically significant properties. Eligible owners can apply for up to $5000 in funding towards restoration or repair works. Last year's grants helped fund a range of projects including restoring a former miner's cottage in Catherine Hill Bay. Applications close on Monday, June 17. Phone 4921 0333 before applying.
Scott sisters in Swansea exhibition
A NEW exhibition, Transformations: Art of the Scott Sisters, opens at SEEN@Swansea, on the Pacific Highway, this Saturday. It follows the historic journey of Harriet and Helena Scott through their illustrations of Australian moths and butterflies. With their collecting boxes, notebooks and paintbrushes, the Scott sisters became two of 19th-century Australia's most prominent natural history illustrators. The exhibition will continue until Sunday, July 20.
