This week, we reached another milestone at Caves Beach with the completion of the amenities building, landscaping and new barbecue area.
It's a milestone because the design has been accredited to meet the Changing Places guidelines, which advocate for creating public toilets that meet the needs of people with disabilities.
The new facility will feature a hoist, adult change table, accessible toilet and shower, and can be accessed by the Master Locksmith Access Key (MLAK) locking system.
In addition, the amenities include a parent's room that also has a disabled toilet.
In the next week or so, we will also see the amenities block at Belmont Baths completed. It features an accessible toilet and shower, and a floating wheelchair storage area. It's a vast improvement to the tired-looking toilet block that was previously there.
Belmont Baths was very popular this summer, so it is wonderful that we can now make this facility more user friendly for a greater proportion of our community.
These new accessible facilities, the equipment, new paths and ramp at Belmont Baths all make it easier for people with mobility challenges to access the beach and baths.
I love our beautiful natural assets, and I am passionate about making sure that all our residents have the ability to make the most of them.
I am very proud that council staff have the initiative and foresight to consider accessibility as part of the design of new infrastructure and facilities. I think it makes us stronger and more connected as a community.
The Rathmines Catalina Festival returns this Sunday, May 19 to celebrate the rich history of the World War II RAAF base. It is always a wonderful day that attracts thousands of flying boat enthusiasts and families.
They all come to see the spectacular air show, seaplanes, military vehicle displays and historical exhibitions. The festival is one of the largest events in Lake Macquarie.
I am told Sunday's event will have something for the whole family to enjoy. This year's festival will include live music, a classic car show and shine, market stalls, kids' activities and much more.
If you do make it to the festival, I'd love to see some of the photos. Please share them on your social media channels using the hashtags #lakemac and #lovelakemac
