Four years on, Windred is now captain and aiming to sign off his State career with another teams title at the Tasmania Golf Club this week.
NSW played the first of the seven-match series against Northern Territory on Tuesday morning and backed-up against Queensland in the afternoon (as the Lakes Mail went to press).
"It is one of the best weeks of the year because of that team aspect," Windred said.
"If all goes well, this will be my last interstate series. To get voted in as captain by the boys is a pretty good feeling. That was one of the things on the bucketlist I wanted to tick off before turning pro.
"I started in a rookie role to win my first series in Queensland four years ago and now I'm captain.
"Hopefully we can get the job done."
Victoria, which have four players in the top six in the country, are favourites.
But Windred is optimistic about the Blues' chances this week.
"We are not the favourites, but we have a good young side," said Windred, who is ranked No.1 in Australia.
"Victoria have a lot of depth and are a little bit older. We have three guys who are 18 and I am probably the oldest at 21."
One of the 18-year-olds is Windred's Charlestown clubmate Jye Pickin, who is playing his maiden interstate series.
"We all know the younger players have the game to do well," Windred said.
"It's an awesome place to play golf. It's a tight, tree-lined course set on some cliffs. There are a lot of elevation changes."
The interstate series is the last big event before Windred heads overseas on June 10 ahead of the British Amateur at Portmarnock in Ireland and the European Amateur in Vienna, Austria.
From there he heads to North American for six weeks, culminating with the US Amateur.
"I'm pretty confident in my game at the moment," Windred said.
"Hopefully I can shoot some good scores and get into contention in some of the big tournaments."
