Sam O'Sullivan starred as Newcastle City caused a last-round upset in the Newcastel District Cricket Association competition by skittling semi-final bound Toronto for 40 at No.1 Sportsground on Saturday.

The visiting Kookaburras, resuming at 3-20 and in pursuit of City's 94, lost 7-20 in the opening session with O'Sullivan claiming a direct-hit run out and adding four wickets to his day-one tally to finish with first-grade best figures of 6-22.

This result saw Toronto fall short of the minor premiership, staying second on the competition ladder and four points adrift of leaders Hamilton-Wickham, while the Sabres ended their campaign with a second straight win.

No batsman reached double figures for Toronto in what was the second lowest total recorded this season.

Opening batsman Jeremy Ford top-scored with 9, and struck the only boundary in the Toronto total.

Toronto will return to the same venue this weekend to take on Charlestown in a semi-final.

Hamwicks will take on Merewether in the other semi-final at Passmore Oval.
