“We really appreciate the efforts of volunteers who pitched in at the 82 local clean-up sites to help keep Lake Macquarie City looking its best,” mayor Kay Fraser said.
“We had the highest number of sites in the Hunter region.
“This year, we saw a decrease in the amount of glass bottles and aluminum cans collected across the city, most likely due to the popularity of the NSW Government’s Return and Earn program.”
Among the locals who rolled up their sleeves and donned gloves to clean up on Sunday was the Bonnells Bay Community Church youth group.
"It was a beautiful day here in Bonnells Bay," the group's Dion Tully said.
"We enjoyed picking up rubbish around our lake and parks knowing that our little contribution is helping to keep our beautiful environment clean here in Lake Mac."
