The Kookaburras scored a comprehensive 81-run victory over semi-final hopefuls University in the match at Ron Hill Oval on Saturday.
The visitors won the toss and inserted the visitors who made 217 from their 45 overs (no play was possible on the first day).
University made a solid enough start to the run chase and were 2-90 when it started to unravel.
Left-arm spinner Dylan Robertson removed the dangerous Nathan Hudson when he induced a nick to wicket-keeper Jeremy Ford.
That started a collapse which saw James Rushford stumped by Ford without scoring, and Sam Reading caught at slip by Aaron Gray for 5.
Suddenly Uni was 5-98. They didn't recover.
The stumping and catch at the wicket capped an excellent day out for Ford who also top-scored with 80 to hold the Kookaburras' innings together.
But it was Robertson who starred with the ball.
He finished with 6-30 off just 10.2 overs.
The second-placed Kookaburras will take on ladder leaders Hamilton-Wickham this Saturday at Joe Passmore Oval.
The Newcastle Herald reports that Hamilton-Wickham, meanwhile, welcomed back two-time Newcastle district player of the year Mark Dries on Saturday for a thrilling one-wicket victory over Belmont at Cahill Oval.
Dries, playing his first game for the club this season outside the T20 Summer Bash, took 4-25 off 14 overs with Hamwicks eventually finishing nine down chasing Belmont’s 98.
The visitors found themselves in some trouble in reply, including Dries out for four, and were 6-44 before top scorer Sam Webber (40) arrived at the crease.
Webber, facing just 29 deliveries and striking seven boundaries, was at his damaging best and got Hamwicks within two runs of the required target before being dismissed by Belmont seamer Jace Lawson (5-25).
Pumas No.11 Abe Gibson (2 not out), on his seventh ball, hit the winning runs off Belmont’s Dan Bailey (4-49) with 14.2 overs to spare.
Earlier in proceedings, Alexander Cook (23) and Toby Gray (29) had been the mainstays of the Belmont innings. No.10 Clayton Colbert (14 not out) was the only other batsman to reach double figures.
