Crafts, technology, exercise, writing, history, science, languages, photography and current affairs are just some of the 40-plus courses on offer.
U3A Southlakes publicity officer Beth Cooper said the U3A organisation was well worth a look.
“University of the Third Age (U3A) is a global education network made up of retired or semi-retired people who run courses, passing on their knowledge and skills to others,” she said.
“Thousands of years of experience in hundreds of fields, and the wisdom this brings to a community is priceless and cannot be matched in any classroom or lecture hall anywhere in the world.
“Their knowledge needs not to retire with them and the many additional skills they have picked up since can, and should, be taught to others.”
In Lake Macquarie, there are three U3A groups - Southlakes at Morisset, Eastlakes at Belmont, and Lake Macquarie at Toronto.
In the Central Coast-Hunter region there are 11 U3A groups.
Each group has its own program of courses.
Among the U3A Southlakes courses on offer are Local History, with tutor Michelle Ward, in which participants visit various places of interest in the Morisset district on the fourth Tuesday of each month, starting on February 26.
Perhaps Karate for Novices, or Lawn Bowls for Fun is more your speed? The karate classes are held on Thursdays at Morisset Scout Hall, while the bowls is at Morisset Country Club.
Members come together to learn not for qualifications but for simple enjoyment, Ms Cooper said.
Southlakes U3A began classes in April, 2015, under founding president Laurene Mulcahy who retired from that post at the end of last year to take on a role as a Central Coast-Hunter regional representative for U3A.
Membership of U3A Southlakes costs $50 a year with no extra course fees charged. There is no limit on the number of courses a person may enroll in.
