He lists Prince Charles and Bill Clinton among his fans; he was nominated for Australian of the Year in 2010; and his music has been preserved for generations to come in the National Film and Sound Archive, in Canberra.
Now, here's something everyone knows about Wilson: he ain't politically correct, and he doesn't much care about the sensibilities of those who are.
In fact, Wilson coined the acronym D.I.L.L.I.G.A.F. (which stands for Do I Look Like I Give A F---) to encapsulate his approach to life.
And that philosophy will again be on show when Wilson takes his R-rated national F.U.P.C. tour to Doyalson-Wyee RSL Club on Thursday, February 28.
Over the years, Wilson has become a social commentator of sorts about political correctness.
I once asked him if the words "politically" and "correct" even belonged together in the same sentence.
He didn't hesitate.
"No. If it's political there's a real good chance it's not correct," he said.
"It's like the terms military intelligence, friendly fire, holy war, petty crime and fun run. There's no such f---ing thing as a fun run."
Fan favourites from Wilson's extensive back catalogue - songs such as I Knew the Bride (When She Used to be a Mole), Hey, Santa Claus…, and Living Next Door to Alan - may well get a run at his new show.
But one thing is for certain: punters will get a night of raucous, earthy humour delivered by a showman whose quick wit and genuine showmanship have enabled him to play in every type of room from an outback pub to the London Palladium.
Wilson's record sales are nudging 4 million, and that's despite receiving little help from mainstream media.
But, still, he insisted on thanking Australian television for helping to build his audience.
How? By being "so boring" that it has forced people out of their homes and down to their local to see him on stage for so many years.
Kevin Bloody Wilson will take his national F.U.P.C. Tour to The Doylo on Thursday, February 28, at 8pm. Tickets: $55.
