Labor’s candidate for Lake Macquarie, Jo Smith, said Labor, if elected in March, would not relocate the Powerhouse Museum - as the government planned to do – and would instead save $1.5 billion to support the arts in regional NSW.
“Labor will double the current Regional Culture Fund, making it $200 million,” she said. “It will also double the funding for public libraries.”
In addition, Labor would provide $14 million funding toward the re-development of Newcastle Art Gallery, which had a significant collection of the late Lake Macquarie artist Sir William Dobell’s works, she said.
“We know how important the arts are when it comes to developing the economy.”
