Police said a man allegedly threatened a 36-year-old woman with an axe and forced her from a vehicle on Wakefield Road at Ryhope last week.
The man, a second man and a woman then drove the four-wheel-drive from the scene before the vehicle was reported to police travelling erratically along the M1 Pacific Motorway near Warnervale.
The four-wheel-drive was involved in a crash with another car at the intersection of Sparks Road and Minnesota Road soon after.
The occupant of the second car sustained minor injuries and was treated at the scene by paramedics.
Two men, aged 33 and 20, and a 22-year-old woman were arrested and taken to John Hunter Hospital with minor injuries.
They were released from hospital and charged with taking a motor vehicle with an occupant on board.
They faced Newcastle court for the first time on Saturday.
