Mayor Kay Fraser said the move was to support tourism and the local economy by providing a variety of accommodation options in Lake Macquarie.
“Lake Macquarie has an active tourism industry, with approximately one million overnight stays recorded annually,” Cr Fraser said.
“Short-term rental accommodation is a key part of this, generating tourism revenue and creating jobs with flow-on benefits for local businesses.”
Residents around NSW have voiced their concerns about some short-term rental homes in their neighbourhood becoming “party houses”.
The council business paper on Monday noted:
“Council has received complaints regarding a small number of short-term rental accommodation premises in the city, which would indicate that the majority are managed well and do not cause issues for their neighbours.
“However, during the public exhibition period of council’s draft LEP amendment on short-term rental accommodation in March 2015, a number of submissions stated they were previously unaware that council should be contacted regarding noise and parking complaints. It is unclear how many other neighbours of short-term rental accommodation premises may be similarly unaware.”
