MEMBER for Lake Macquarie, Greg Piper, said an announcement would be made soon on a plan to better secure and manage Morisset Hospital and the kangaroos in the grounds. “I've been in continued discussions with Hunter Health, animal welfare groups and National Parks and Wildlife Service regarding the kangaroos at Morisset Hospital,” Mr Piper said. Tourist numbers had grown and become a significant problem at the hospital, which had impacted patients, residents, staff and kangaroos, he said.

Forum on power station health impacts
A PUBLIC forum on the health impacts of coal-fired power stations in NSW will be held on Thursday, November 22, at Club Macquarie, Argenton, from 6.30pm to 8pm. The forum is being hosted by Environmental Justice Australia, Doctors for the Environment Australia, Hunter Community Environment Centre, and the Nature Conservation Council of NSW. Speakers will include Dr Ben Ewald, an epidemiologist and air pollution expert, Dr James Whelan of Environmental Justice Australia, and Dr Jon Van der Kallen.
Funds available for events that benefit community
APPLICATIONS for Round 2 of Lake Macquarie City Council’s sponsorship program are now open to fund events and activities that will increase visitation and economic development in the city. Round 1 recipients included Port to Port MTB, Rathmines Catalina Festival, Lake Macquarie Festival of Surfing, The Real Film Festival, and Star Struck. Applicants could be eligible for up to $20,000 per application for activities that provide a cultural, social, environmental and economic benefit to the community.
Old water meters quickly replaced
CENTRAL Coast Council is rolling out a $2.5-million project over several years to replace water meters. More than $675,000 will be invested this financial year to replace about 16,000 meters. Council’s water and sewer director, Bileen Nel said replacing a meter takes about 10 minutes to complete, which minimises the time residents will be without water. Components from the old meters will be recycled.
Regional conferences
THE state government has opened a $500,000 Regional Business Event Development Fund to attract and create more business events in regional areas. Parliamentary Secretary for the Central Coast and the Hunter, Scot MacDonald, said staging business events was a great way to showcase our region’s conferencing facilities and array of tourism offerings. “I encourage conference planners to apply now for this terrific funding opportunity,” he said.
Chamber to host AGM
SOUTHLAKE Business Chamber and Community Alliance (SBCCA) will hold its annual general meeting and Christmas party at The Sset Food and Wine, Morisset, on Tuesday, December 11, at 5.30pm. SBCCA president Fiona Hall said nominations would be taken for the positions of president, vice-president, secretary and general committee members. Nomination forms must be received by the secretary no later than Tuesday, December 4.
