Locally, we acknowledge leading citizens and inspirational role models in our community through the Lake Macquarie Australia Day Awards.
Nominations for the awards are closing soon in four categories to individuals and groups who have made a significant difference in our community through their efforts.
The City’s most prestigious honour, the Citizen of the Year Award is given to the person who has made the most outstanding contribution for the benefit of the community or environment.
Similar to Citizen of the Year, the Young Citizen of the Year Award shines the spotlight on our youth and the contribution they make within our community.
It is awarded to a person, aged 21 years or younger, who has made the most outstanding contribution for the benefit of the community or environment.
Whether it’s to improve our natural environment, help local fauna or to benefit the people in our City, the Volunteer of the Year Award is given to an individual who has shown commitment, perseverance and has made a positive impact within the City.
Similar to Volunteer of the Year, the Community Group of the Year Award is given to a group or not-for-profit organisation that has made a significant contribution to improve our natural environment, help local fauna or to benefit the people in our City.
Our previous award winners have worked to improve our natural environment, connect communities, raise money for worthy causes, promote inclusiveness and advocate for others, to assist those in need, promote healthy lifestyles and life-long learning, and support the activities of local clubs and organisations.
Their selfless efforts to make Lake Macquarie a better place are truly remarkable.
These special people inspire us through their achievements, and challenge us all to think about how we can make our own contribution to creating a better and more caring society.
Nomination forms are at lakemac.com.au/ausawards, and close on October 29.
I will announce the award winners on January 21, 2019.
