New Zealand, China and the United Arab Emirates will be among the countries to receive the coverage.
Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter, Scot MacDonald, said he was pleased that support from the state government had helped the event to return to Lake Macquarie.
“The Offshore Superboat Championships is Australia’s national series for powerboat racing and promises to showcase the best of the region to a national and international television audience,” Mr MacDonald said.
“Anticipated to attract more than 1,100 overnight visitors and inject almost $551,000 into the local economy, the event will be broadcast nationally on SBS in Australia and distributed internationally.”
The Superboat racing will be a highlight of the Lake Mac Big Weekend.
“The Lake Mac Big Weekend will also offer artisan markets, music performances and a food and wine festival, providing the perfect opportunity for visitors to soak up the exciting event atmosphere,” Mr MacDonald said.
NSW Minister for Tourism and Major Events, Adam Marshall, said bringing events to regional NSW was a key focus for the government.
“The NSW tourism industry is a serious industry worth serious money so promoting our great state means more local jobs and growth in regional economies,” Mr Marshall said.
Lake Macquarie mayor Kay Fraser said that with 12 events over two days, the Lake Mac Big Weekend was one of the Hunter region’s headline annual fixtures.
“Past years have shown us how popular this event is, not just with locals but with people coming from outside Lake Macquarie to stay for the weekend,” Cr Fraser said.
“One of the big drawcards of the Lake Mac Big Weekend is that it’s all free, but people who come for the event spend money on accommodation, food and entertainment, and this has significant benefits for the local economy.”
The event is expected to generate more than $10 million in direct and flow-on revenue for businesses in Lake Macquarie.
The Lake Mac Big Weekend will feature 12 separate events including jet ski races, aerobatic displays by Matt Hall Racing, a show and shine of vintage cars and hot rods, a Sunday food and wine festival, and market stalls around the lake.
