It comes as the teenager captains ACT-NSW Country at the current Under-17 National Championships in Queensland.
At the end of that tournament, which wraps up Thursday, 24 players from the 39 announced this week will take part in a Cricket Australia rookie camp.
“The CA Pathways Rookie Squad is now entering its fourth season,” Cricket Australia Pathways Manager Graham Manou said.
“It’s a chance for them to get specialist support at both a state and national level from a skills perspective, and also in areas such as their off-field education.
“A select group will then take part in a high-performance camp at the Bupa National Cricket Centre in 2019.”
Gray was the sole Newcastle representative picked in the extended squad and one of 11 from NSW.
He has 11 wickets at an average of 14.5 at the Australian under-17 titles. He also has 62 runs and three catches.
ACT-NSW Country has made Wednesday’s semi with five wins from six games.
