The chick-hatching project began in 2006 when the Cooranbong school’s current year 12 graduating class was in kindergarten.
The children place eggs in the incubator and each day they discuss how their embryos are growing and developing. On the 10th day they candle the eggs to check them.
Once the chicks hatch, the students weigh, measure and name the chicks, and draw diagrams and write reports on their findings.
Each year, Daron Pratt, the children’s ministry director for the Northern NSW conference of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, has assisted with the program.
Mr Pratt owns prize-winning chickens and is a member of Central Coast Poultry Club which provides the incubator.
Year 12 students recently visited the kindergarten class to chat with them and share their experiences.
