The festival is a celebration of 1950s and 1960s culture, featuring plenty of rock and roll music and dance, as well as rocking muscle cars and classic bikes, and even a 1950s-style pin-up girl competition.
As well as the chance to show off a love of a love of the pre-1978 era, Blast from the Past also seeks to give back to the community, by supporting the Toronto Mens Shed.
Brenda Hartmire, from the event organiser Lake Side Marketing and Events, said everyone involved in the festival is looking forward to the “new and improved” venue in Rathmines, not least because of an ease of access the foreshore offers.
“We’re all looking forward to what Rathmines can bring to the table because we feel like it’s a very accessible place, which means a lot more people will be able to enjoy the festival,” Ms Hartmire explained.
“We’ve moved, but there’s so many things that everyone still loves that will be on show, like photographs and artifacts from the 40s, 50s and 60s, retro and vintage vendors, memorabilia stalls and lots of food for everyone.”
As well as the stands and stalls around the event, one of the main attractions will be the Show & Shine, with early-days vehicles, motor cars and motor bikes all on display.
There will also be rock and roll dance clubs, a ready to be used dance floor at the boat ramp, and a pinup competition to be hosted at noon.
“We’ve had a lot of inquiries from car clubs that we haven’t had before, so we feel like this is going to be another big year for the festival,” Ms Hartmire said. “There’s always new things to see and new people coming on board, so it feels new every time.”
“It’s a really family-focused event, and we’ve made it easy to get to at Rathmines, so we hope to see everyone come along and have an amazing day.”
This year’s pinup competition will include categories like Best Retro Look, Best Vintage Look, Best Mature Look, Best Junior Look and Best Couple or Family Look. There will also be new categories like Best Retro or Vintage Swimsuits.
Entry for the pinup competition must be confirmed by 11.30am on the day, at the foreshore information booth.
Event entry is free, and car parking is available all around the venue. More information on the event details can be found at blastfromthepastfestival.com.au.
