Our Power will be screened at Morisset Country Club at 7pm on Friday, August 24.
The film’s producer is Anissha Vijayan.
“Our film explores the socio-economic and environmental issues facing the Latrobe Valley community today and their transition to a ‘post-coal’ world,” Ms Vijayan said.
“The film delves into the history of coal mining in the valley, the transition of the power industry as it was privatised in the late 1990s, the devastating Hazelwood mine fire of 2014, and explores what the future of the power industry could look like in Australia.”
Hunter Community Environment Centre and Environmental Justice Australia will co-host the screening.
The film is directed by Peter Yacono and has been three years in the making.
It was made on a shoestring budget of $45,000 which was entirely crowdfunded by more than 200 people.
A live question-and-answer session will be held following the screening. Mr Yacono and Ms Vijayan will host the Q&A panel which will comprise Latrobe Valley community members who star in the film.
They include Luke van der Meulen, a former Victorian mining president; Wendy Farmer, the president of Voices of the Valley; Ron Ipsen, an ex-coal mine worker; and Tracie Lund, a former Hunter local and now manager of Morwell Neighbourhood House.
