Lake Macquarie City Council is offering $500 prizes for the creators of the winning colour “skin” designs to adorn two outdoor steel table tennis tables.
Public submissions close on Friday, August 24.
The custom-made steel table tennis tables will be installed on the foreshore at Warners Bay and outside council’s Speers Point administration building.
Council's cultural services manager Jacqui Hemsley said the tables were essentially a blank canvas to be seen by thousands of residents and visitors to the city.
“It’s an open design brief, so our panel of judges is open to anything people can dream up,” Ms Hemsley said.
“We want them to be visually spectacular pieces of public art, but keep in mind they will be working table tennis tables.”
Entry is open to locals of any age and ability - from kids hand-drawing their designs on a template available at lakemac.com.au, to accomplished designers using software programs such as InDesign.
Winning designs will be printed on vinyl and applied to each table’s steel surface.
Council news:
“The two winning designers will receive a $500 cash prize and will have their name inscribed permanently on their table,” Ms Hemsley said.
Council's city design acting co-ordinator Caroline Cook – one of the competition judges – said the Warners Bay table would further invigorate one of the most popular stretches of Lake Macquarie’s foreshore.
“I’m really looking forward to seeing what people come up with to add some colour and flair,” Ms Cook said.
A separate, concurrent competition calls for public submissions to design a series of steel panels which will form a new raised balustrade outside council’s administration building.
Ms Hemsley said each panel could be a stand-alone piece, or one in a series, forming a linear narrative.
“Judges will be looking for designs that somehow reflect Lake Macquarie’s culture, history, flora, fauna or natural beauty.”
The winning designer will receive a $500 cash prize.
Entries for that competition also close on Friday, August 24.
