Lake Macquarie City Council is seeking potential exhibitors to bring its SEEN@Swansea gallery to life in 2019, with six exhibition periods available throughout the year.
SEEN@Swansea was established in September 2017, on the first floor of the Swansea Community Centre, to provide a professional space to present touring shows and exhibitions of the city’s social history and art.
“This professional exhibition space has been created to showcase exhibitions that celebrate our heritage and creativity as well as present thought-provoking curated exhibitions on various themes and issues,” council’s cultural services manager Jacqui Hemsley said.
“With over 120,000 people using the Swansea Centre each year, SEEN@Swansea provides an excellent opportunity to get more involved with arts and culture in our community.”
Preference will be given to exhibitions that:
- present interesting and unique aspects of the region’s social history, heritage and contemporary culture;
- encourage research and publication; and/or
- present a collection of artwork, objects and memorabilia that will appeal to visitors.
“Priority will be given to exhibitions not previously seen in Lake Macquarie and the surrounding region,” Ms Hemsley said.
The SEEN@Swansea space comprises an exhibition area of 88 square metres, 18.5 metres of hanging space, and a total 50 linear metres along which to display items. The space is also climate controlled, security monitored and manned by a dedicated team of SEEN volunteers.
From Saturday, August 11, to Sunday, October 7, the site is hosting Dead and Buried, an exhibition delving into the fascinating history of cemeteries in Lake Macquarie and the colourful characters laid to rest within them.
Application forms to exhibit in 2019 can be downloaded at lakemac.com.au.
Applicants must provide a project description outlining the proposed exhibition and how it would attract visitors.
Applications close on Monday, December 10, with successful exhibitors announced later that month.
