The NSW Greens have called for shark nets to be hauled up for good from beaches on the Central Coast and Lake Macquarie following the release of government data on netting and SMART drumline trials. Data showed shark nets deployed along the NSW coast from Wollongong to Newcastle caught and/or killed 403 marine creatures in 2017/18, including dolphins, rays and endangered turtles.

Tony Sheridan Walk
CENTRAL Coast Council will name the walkway from The Entrance waterfront to the surf club ‘The Tony Sheridan Walk’ in honour of the former Wyong Shire mayor. Mr Sheridan served on Wyong Council for 27 years including eight as president and one as mayor. He was instrumental in the revitalisation of The Entrance, the upgrade of Wyong Road, and the establishment of major local shopping centres including Bay Village and Westfield Tuggerah.
State life saving titles
LAKE Macquarie City Council’s standing committee on Monday meeting discussed allocating more than $150,000 in funding in 2019/20 to secure the 2020 State Surf Life Saving Championships at Blacksmiths Beach. Mayor Kay Fraser said the event was a great showcase for Lake Macquarie as a tourism and event destination. The full council will consider the matter at the meeting on Monday, August 27.
Funding for local legal centres
CENTRAL Coast Community Legal Centres, including at Toukley and Wyong, would be among the beneficiares of statewide government funding of $15 million over four years, Parliamentary Secretary for the Central Coast, Scot MacDonald, said. Community Legal Centres provide free legal help for people in need. The funding would also benefit the Court Support Scheme which operates in local courts across the Central Coast, Mr MacDonald said.
