Wait for the tour report
THE Lake Macquarie City Council delegation travelling abroad to gain first-hand knowledge regarding possible Smart City improvements (“Debate over $35k study tour”, Lakes Mail, August 2) within their realm should be given the benefit of the doubt regarding the stated necessity for face-to-face interactions.

As in most jobs, l would expect a daily time sheet, or account of the what, where, and why of the tour itinerary should be presented to the Lakes Mail for publication.
Councilor Kay Fraser often writes about items of interest in her column in the Lakes Mail, so a rundown of what was achieved on the tour should be well worth reading.
The actual cost is below expectations for traveling politicians, and worth the money, pending a summary report in the not-too-distant future.

Toronto footpath width
I FEEL there is enough room on the new footpaths on The Boulevarde, Toronto. Why do people complain when having to wait a few seconds to pass strollers and others?
The problem is getting hit by bike and skateboard riders on footpaths. I refer to the Lakes Mail’s photograph of mayor Kay Fraser on The Boulevarde, and a bike rider passing her on the footpath.
Hopefully, the trees will grow quickly for the summer as there will be no respite from the sun on any seating at the moment. It’s nice for winter, but come summer you will bake at the bus stop.

Toronto ‘rat run’ coming
PARENTS, carers and staff at Toronto Public School should be alert and alarmed at the consequences of recent actions taken by Lake Macquarie City Council.
To accommodate the increased traffic resulting from the proposed high-rise tourist accommodation adjacent to the Royal Motor Yacht Club, Toronto, stretching down to the foreshore, surveyors for the council have already completed a survey to extend Arnott Avenue to Victory Parade, across the historical railway line and community-developed Greenway 1.
Drivers coming south to shop at Toronto or go further south to Carey Bay and Coal Point, wishing to avoid four sets of traffic lights, will turn left into Renwick Street, turn right after the school and immediately left into Arnott Avenue.
Once they turn left into Victory Parade they can proceed to their destination, with no hold-ups from traffic lights.
So the council is planning to create a “rat run” which will increase traffic on the narrow, congested road outside the main entrance to Toronto Public School.
For more information on these proposals and how to express your opinion about them, go to the Toronto Foreshore Protection Group’s website tfpg.org.au.

Didn’t look right
WOULD someone like to explain why a learner driver I saw in a BMW had a bright red mobile phone attached at eye level on the windscreen?
Maybe teaching them how to text and drive?

How to get our fair share
WHY can our federal parliamentarians not pass a bill into law that simply states that any income (company or personal) generated within Australia must be subject to being taxed in Australia and any attempt to circumvent this law would attract a fine equivalent to five times the original taxation, plus legal costs that the federal government (ATO) incurred in pursuing the matter?
The aim of such a law would be to stop individuals and multinational companies making use of tax havens and/or paying a (lower) tax in another country.
