The brigade’s 35 active members are preparing for one of their biggest annual fundraising events – a trivia night at Morisset Country Club, on Saturday night, August 4.
They’re hoping to raise money to purchase a range of equipment including ropes, shackles and harnesses for working on roofs; new torches and lighting for their Tuesday night training sessions; and maybe some small fridges for the brigade’s two trucks.
Previous fundraising efforts have helped to buy such equipment as thermal imaging cameras, new hose nozzles, and backpack blowers used for moving debris at the scene of motor vehicle accidents.
Firefighter Martin Campbell said the brigade typically responded to much more than calls for help in battling bushfires and house fires.
His crew could also be called to assist with anything from fallen trees and storm damage, to motor vehicle accidents, and searches.
And the brigade loves its work.
“You’re helping and putting something back into the community,” Mr Campbell said.
His colleague, Andrew Waterhouse, said the brigade enjoyed a special bond.
“It’s like you’re a family. You make good friends here,” he said.
The brigade is now recruiting new members.
Mr Campbell emphasised that new recruits don’t have to be fit young men who are willing to battle fires on the front line. In fact, new recruits don’t have to be men, or firefighters, at all.
“We have people of all ages, and from all walks of life in the brigade, and we need people in support roles, too,” he said.
Brigade secretary Alicia Bruinik has been with the team for five years and encouraged more women to get involved.
“It’s the best feeling, and it’s a fun and welcoming environment for women. In fact, we just had another five women join us,” she said.
