Joelene Gentleman, 10, of Toronto Public School, received the horse-shaped pendant from Kaylene Fitzpatrick, of Kadia Jewellery, in Toronto, on Friday.

Ms Fitzpatrick said the competition was launched for Mother’s Day, with children from seven local schools accepting the challenge to design a jewellery piece that they’d like to give to their mum, or another cherished family member.

“We had hundreds of wonderful artistic designs from children aged 5 to 12,” Ms Fitzpatrick said.

“There were lots of unicorns, stars, hearts, family names, soccer balls and rainbows submitted, and the kids really got into the spirit of the competition.”

Kadia staff chose a winning design from each school, then the community voted on Facebook for their overall winner.

Ms Fitzpatrick, who has been designing jewellery for 18 years and has been in the industry for 31, said Joelene’s sketch in pencil was scanned on a computer, before being transformed into the pendent.

“I think it’s a beautiful design, and I wanted the pendent to be exactly like Joelene’s picture,” she said.

The jeweller did not alter or embellish the design.

Joelene said she chose a horse design to remind her mum of her childhood.

“When Mum was a kid she always liked riding horses,” Joelene said.
