Dry July is an annual campaign in which Australians sign up to abstain from drinking alcohol for the month of July.
Dry July participants ask their family, friends and work colleagues to sponsor them, and the funds raised are used to help people affected by cancer.
For the past six years Central Coast Local Health District’s (CCLHD) CoastCanCare Wellness Program has been a beneficiary of Dry July.
The program is a wellbeing and recovery tool for local adults with cancer, and their support networks.
It provides supportive and complementary therapies such as music, exercise and tai chi classes and focuses on stress and pain management.
CoastCanCare Wellness Program coordinator Tia Covi is encouraging locals to get behind Dry July by registering individually, or forming a group, and encouraging a little healthy competition among work colleagues, sporting mates and family members.
“The CoastCanCare Wellness Program is designed to give people the techniques, tools, strategies and support to keep their life on track, during and after cancer treatment,” Ms Covi said.
“This program is made possible because of donations from the community. Every day I see first-hand the benefits.
“Participants who have attended our programs have reported feeling less stressed and anxious and more connected, supported and skilled to promote their own health and wellbeing,” she said.
“We are really proud of this program and thankful to our generous community for continuing to get on board Dry July to support it and keep it available to locals.”
This year, Dry July participants and their supporters can again nominate the CoastCanCare Wellness Program as their beneficiary, ensuring their fundraising dollar benefits local cancer patients.
Sign-ups for 2018 are now open.
A Dry July Foundation spokesperson said there were plenty of good reasons to get involved.
“Having a month off alcohol also has great health benefits, such as sleeping better, having more energy and, of course, no hangovers!” the spokesperson said.
“So you're not only helping others, you're helping yourself. It's a win-win.”
