About 2.30pm on Sunday, June 10, a 13-year-old girl was shopping with friends at Charlestown Square.
As she approached an escalator she was grabbed on the arm by a man who appeared agitated and aggressive, police said.
The girl and her friends ran from the man who started to follow them, police said.
A member of the public saw the man following the girls and stopped him while the girls ran to a nearby shop and alerted security.
The man quickly left the centre.
Police were notified and an investigation was started by detectives from Lake Macquarie Police District.
The man police are looking for is Caucasian, with a solid build, greying dark hair, and aged in his mid-40s. He was wearing a green, checked, flannelette long-sleeve shirt with long shorts and boots.
