When narrowing down which school is best for a child, there are some things which can be done to make the process easy for parents, the child and also the school.
Firstly, collect as much information as possible: compile a list of questions you’d like answered and consider speaking to other families who have children already attending the school.
Here are some questions parents can ponder:
- What facilities does the school have? Do the facilities match up with my child’s interests?
- Do I feel comfortable with the school atmosphere?
- What are the school’s goals for their students, and do I agree with them?
- Does the school offer other services such as care outside school hours?
The next step is to prepare for the enrolment process. No matter what school is chosen, there will be forms to complete and provide.
Parents may need to provide copies of a child’s birth certificate and immunisation records. If the school is affiliated with a religion they may require a baptismal certificate. Other information which may be required includes copies of any family law or other relevant court orders (if applicable).
If your child has any assessments or reports relevant to their learning needs, liaise with the school’s learning support educator.
Be sure to also ask whether there is an enrolment fee and if the school has a uniform pool or somewhere to buy good quality second hand items. Get in early to nab the best of the mandatory items.
