Planning and sustainability manager Alice Howe said council was providing a range of support services to help residents make a smooth transition to the new bin regime.
“Staff will be on hand for a few hours each week at community events and shopping centres, so people can ask questions and find out more about the Food+Garden=Green service,” Dr Howe said.
From July 30, all food scraps and garden waste will go into the household green bin, which will be emptied weekly.
Garbage (red) bins and recycling (yellow) bins will be emptied on alternating fortnights.
“This will reduce the amount of waste going to landfill by an estimated 17,000 tonnes a year and offset increasing annual waste disposal costs, making our city’s waste services more affordable into the future,” Dr Howe said.
Further information about the new system, results of past community consultation and research are available at lakemac.com.au/food-garden-green.
