Eleni Comino of Morisset Rotary Club, Daniel Joyce of the St John Vianney Parish, Morisset, and Morisset and Toronto Meals on Wheels were among the 40 Hunter residents to receive Hunter Volunteer Awards at the event in Cessnock.
Ms Comino was recognised for helping to raise more than $14,000 for the Morogoro community, in Tanzania. Her passion was sparked following her posting to Tanzania with Global Medics at age 16.
Mr Joyce was honoured for his volunteer work at the school since 1980, which has included helping students with reading difficulties, and manning parish barbecues, as well as for his work with scouts and cubs.
And Morisset and Toronto Meals on Wheels was honoured for its work with the community over more than 50 years. The group currently has more than 150 volunteers who help in a variety of roles.
“The time, energy and effort our award recipients have selflessly given to a myriad of organisations in our community is truly commendable,” Mr Fitzgibbon said.
The award presentation was attended by more than 100 people including federal member for Paterson, Meryl Swanson, Cessnock mayor Bob Pynsent, and Singleton mayor Sue Moore.
“It’s clear from today’s wonderful group of recipients we have no shortage of generous, community-orientated citizens who sacrifice their time and effort to assist others. The Hunter, without doubt, is all the better for their contribution,” Mr Fitzgibbon said.
“I am proud to host a volunteers event to acknowledge the many outstanding volunteers who are determined to make the Hunter a more vibrant, supportive and special place to live.
“I would also like to thank those who took the time to submit their nominations to ensure the recognition of our local volunteers.”
