Parliamentary Secretary for the Central Coast and the Hunter, Scot MacDonald, encouraged local clubs to apply for projects which would support local cricket participation and benefit the whole community.
“We know that sports like cricket have many proven health, social and economic benefits and it is a priority for the Central Coast and the Hunter to foster participation in the region,” Mr MacDonald said.
“The Central Coast and the Hunter have a proud history of cricket participation, and the fund offers an excellent opportunity for clubs and association to form partnerships with local councils to improve the quality and quantity of community facilities.”
Minister for Sport Stuart Ayres said the ICC World T20 Legacy Fund would be delivered over three years to support grassroots through to elite level cricket participation.
Chief executive officer of Cricket NSW, Andrew Jones, said that cricket was a global sport, and the World T20 will witness 1.5 billion viewers tune in to 14 NSW matches.
“Currently there are 400,000 grass roots players participating in cricket in NSW, and I am confident that the upcoming ICC World T20 tournament will draw more players to the sport,” Mr Jones said.
“This first round of funding provides an exciting opportunity for councils and local clubs to consider projects that provide long-term benefits to local communities.”
Successful projects valued at between $5,000 and $250,000 will be funded up to 50 per cent of projects costs.
Applications close on July 13.
