The work will require lane closures and a reduced speed limit, and will inevitably impact on traffic flows through Morisset, especially at peak times.
Motorists are urged to be patient, and to drive to the conditions.
The state government has provided $500,000 for the work, as part of the Walking Communities Program, to improve pedestrian connections.
Roads and Maritime Services said the work would result in safety improvements on Dora Street, between Doyalson and Station streets.
An RMS spokesperson said in the five years to June 2015, there were six recorded crashes in this area with three of the crashes resulting in injury.
Two of the crashes also involved a pedestrian crossing the road.
Many locals have long considered the pedestrian crossing to be dangerous. They’ve complained that vehicles parked on Dora Street sometimes obscure the view of motorists approaching the crossing, while pedestrians have noted the speed of approaching vehicles is often a concern.
“Lake Macquarie City Council will carry out the work on behalf of Roads and Maritime, which will involve installing a traffic signalled pedestrian crossing,” the spokesperson said.
The work is expected to be completed by late June, weather permitting.
Work is being carried out from 6.30am to 5.30pm, or from 4pm to 2.30am, from Sundays to Fridays.
To ensure the work zone is safe for motorists and workers, lane closures and a 40kph speed limit are in place while work is carried out.
Motorists are advised to drive to the conditions, and follow the direction of signs and traffic control.
