Tiahla Simpson, a student at Northlakes High School, received the Harding Miller Education Foundation Scholarship.
This scholarship is to provide practical support to lift “educational outcomes and career aspirations of high potential girls”.
Each Harding Miller Education Foundation Scholarship is valued at $20,000 over four years.
And Paul McDermott, the principal of Blue Haven Public School, received the Public Education Foundation Principals Scholarship.
The principals scholarship enables principals of government schools to undertake a short professional education program at the Harvard Graduate School of Education.
The two were among more than 230 public school students and educators from across NSW to receive scholarships totalling more than $600,000 from the Public Education Foundation.
The scholarships are presented to help recipients reach their potential by enhancing their learning and professional pathways.
The Secretary of the Department of Education, Mark Scott, said the scholarships provided financial assistance but also acknowledged each recipient’s dedication and commitment to public education.
“These scholarships are about recognising and rewarding student excellence to encourage high- achieving students to continue to maximise their potential,” Mr Scott said.
“At the same time, the scholarships aim to remove those barriers to achievement created by social and economic disadvantage.
“It’s encouraging to see that through the generous and ongoing support of its sponsors, the Public Education Foundation is able to support even more richly deserving students each year.”
The Public Education Foundation is a charity dedicated to enhancing the value and reputation of public education by providing life-changing scholarships to its students, teachers and principals.
The event is sponsored by the NSW Teachers Federation, the NSW Department of Education, Teachers Health, First State Super, and the Teachers Mutual Bank.
