About 7.15am, a 44-year-old man armed with an axe allegedly broke into a number of homes on Rosemary Row Road, police said.
The armed man allegedly assaulted a 73-year-old man with an axe outside a home on the road.
The older man sustained a shoulder wound. He was taken to John Hunter Hospital where he remains in a stable condition.
His injuries are not considered life threatening, police said.
Officers from Lake Macquarie Police District established a crime scene and started investigations into the incident.
The men are known to each other, police said.
Police arrested a 44-year-old man at the scene.
He was taken to Toronto Police Station where he was charged with multiple offences.
He was refused bail to appear at Newcastle Local Court on Saturday.
